Gophers Hit the Mat at Two Events this Weekend

Senior Scott Schiller will wrestle in the NWCA All-Star Classic, while a collection of 19 Gophers will compete unattached in the Warren Williamson/Daktronics Open

While the official start of Minnesota’s 2014-15 wrestling season is still eight days away, 20 Gopher wrestlers will hit the mat this coming weekend at a pair of events.

Senior Scott Schiller, currently ranked No. 2 in the nation at 197 pounds, will get his season started on Saturday night in Philadelphia when he takes on defending National Champion and top-ranked J’Den Cox of Missouri at the National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) All-Star Classic. This will be the first-ever meeting between Schiller and Cox.

The event will feature one bout at every weight class. All matchups pit highly ranked wrestlers from across the country against each other. It will be streamed live by Flowrestling and will also re-air on Fox College Sports via tape-delay several times during the season, with the first airing scheduled for two weeks after the event. For fans that can’t catch the action live or stream it online, be sure to follow Gopher Wrestling on Twitter for updates.

The following day (Sunday, Nov. 2), 19 Gophers will compete in the 22nd annual Warren Williamson Daktronics Open in Brookings, S.D. The event is one in which Gopher wrestlers, particularly incoming freshman, regularly compete, though all participating Gophers will wrestle unattached at the event.

The Gophers who will participate in this year’s tournament are: Josh Shupe, Ben Morgan, Will Balow, Dalton Lunde, Tijani Karaborni, Faris Karaborni, Steve Polakowski, Tommy Thorn, Colin Carr, Gannon Volk, Luke Destiche, Joshua Mora, Brandon Krone, Chris Pfarr, Skyler Petry, Dylan Urbach, Ethan Lizak, Jack Bass and Darius Wright.
